Local Counsel Affilliations

FELDMAN ORLANSKY & SANDERS frequently associates with law firms from other states that have trial or appellate matters pending in the Alaska state or federal courts. Rule 81(a)(2) of the Alaska Rules of Civil Procedure requires that lawyers who are not admitted to practice in Alaska associate with local counsel in all cases brought in Alaska state courts. Local counsel affiliations are generally required, but may be waived by the court, in federal court actions in the District of Alaska pursuant to Local Rule 83.1(c)(2).

Out-of-state lawyers frequently find substantial benefit in obtaining the assistance of local counsel familiar with Alaska procedure and customs of practice, the local culture, and the variations among regions in Alaska that strongly affect trial strategy, jury selection, and case presentation. The scope of work provided by FELDMAN ORLANSKY & SANDERS in matters in which the firm serves as local counsel is determined by the client and by lead counsel. In some cases, the firm provides limited assistance to assure compliance with local rules and procedures. In other cases, the firm assumes primary case responsibility. Generally, the firm is amenable to participating in the arrangement that best meets the needs of the client and out-of-state counsel. The firm is especially sensitive to avoiding duplication of effort provided by lead counsel and to minimizing the cost to the client of joint representation.
